Juerg Leuthold is Head of the Department of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (D-ITET) and Head of the Institute of Electromagnetic Fields (IEF) at ETH Zurich, Switzerland. His research focuses on photonics, plasmonics, and THz technologies, with emphasis on applications in communications and sensing.
Prior to joining ETH Zurich, he was affiliated with the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Germany, where he served from 2004 to 2013 as Head of the Institute of Photonics and Quantum Electronics (IPQ) and the Helmholtz Institute of Microtechnology (IMT). From 1999 to 2004, he worked at Bell Labs, Lucent Technologies, USA, conducting device and system research in III–V semiconductors and silicon photonics for high-speed telecommunications. He received his Ph.D. in physics from ETH Zurich in 1998 for work in integrated optics and all-optical communications.
Juerg Leuthold is a Fellow of Optica and IEEE, a member of the Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences (SATW), and a corresponding member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences. He has served the scientific community as a member of the Helmholtz Association Think Tank, as a board member of Optica, and in numerous roles including general chair, program chair, and committee member.
